Dr. Cero,
When you gave me my new knee, you took ten years off of my age and my daily life and outlook improved. My wife Betty, daughter Pat, and granddaughter DeDe were all relieved. Your wonderful, warm conversation gave us so much information about what to expect that I decided to move forward with the operation. Your staff and the hospital are so caring and cohesive. Dr. Vanbodegom has always recommended doctors who are good, and he certainly sent me to one that is. Thanks more than I can say for a wonderful human being like you.

Dr. Craig Arntz
Wow! Am I ever thrilled to have this opportunity to give the highest praise possible to the folks who helped me regain my life! I know this sounds like an exaggeration but, believe me, it is NOT! Valley Orthopedic Associates and Dr. Craig Arntz, specifically, made it possible for me to reenter the life that was passing me by.
For over a year and a half people saw me clutching my left shoulder with my right hand in a guarding pose; such actions as lifting an ordinary frying pan or reaching a dish from a shelf above shoulder height were simply impossible. As an independently spirited person, this was difficult, but when I had to pass my first grandchild to others because my useless shoulder could not bear her weight, I knew the time had come to have the total shoulder replacement surgery which would give me my life back.
Thanks to the kindness and humanity of Dr. Arntz and his entire operating team, my entire family was as warmly received as I was and well informed as to the nature and extent of my surgery. The recovery process and physical therapy went more smoothly than I could have ever imagined as the exercises worked me closer to my goal day by day.
Thanks to the tremendous talent of Dr. Craig Arntz and the team at Valley Orthopedic Associates, within four months I regained my full range of motion, at a year I had the strength to lift and play with my grandchild and at two years post-surgery, I refer to my replaced shoulder as "my good arm". I feel like myself again and I'm so much happier to participate fully in life including lifting both of my grandchildren! Don't wait another day living half of your life! Visit Valley Orthopedic Associates and see what wonders they can work for you!

Most Sincerely,
Elaine Haroldson

World-ranked skateboarder gets back to game with VOA.
On April 25, Skyler Siljeg of Bothell, WA made the trip to Skate Barn West in Renton. It wasn't just a day of skateboarding. Then 14-year-old Sky, a sponsored skateboarder since age five, was training for the Pro-tec Pool Party - a World Cup Skateboarding Pro Bowl event taking place the next month in California.
Pam Miller, Sky's mother, said he was working hard to get ready. While mom was watching, Sky had a mishap and slid out on the bottom of a ramp.
"I told him 'you're tired, let's go,'" Pam said. "He replied with 'and I broke my arm,' as if he said he had to tie his shoelace."
Pam drove her son to the ER at Valley Medical Center where orthopedic surgeon William Barrett, M.D. was on call. Dr. Barrett examined Sky's arm and reviewed the x-rays. Then he delivered the news.
"Sky needed surgery to repair the break. We did it that evening," Dr. Barrett said.
"They got Sky right in and reassured him," Pam said. "Dr. Barrett explained the risk factors and why surgery was necessary."
After surgery, Sky and his mom learned the good news. Dr. Barrett was able to reset Sky's arm without having to use pins or screws. But, Sky's arm had to be set in a full cast and the skating competition was only three weeks away.
At the time of his injury, Sky was ranked sixth in the World Cup Skateboarding Pro Bowl. Skating in the Pro-tec Pool Party meant an opportunity to move up in the rankings.
In 10 years of skating, Sky has always worn protective gear and has had relatively few injuries. Breaking his arm has been the most serious.
"When you have a passion for any sport, it comes with risks," Sky said.
Sky was willing to continue taking risks to do what he loves, even if it meant skating with a cast.
"I asked honest questions about what I wanted to do and found out honestly what the answers were and what the consequences would be," Sky said.
Dr. Barrett fully explained to Sky what could happen if he were to fall and re-injure his arm.
"We talked about the risks and I gave recommendations on home therapy. He had all of the information he needed to make a decision for himself," Dr. Barrett said.
On May 16, Sky skated in the main Pro-tec Pool Party event - in a full arm cast - and placed 13 among 27 professionals from around the globe. That placement pushed him from sixth to fifth in the Pro Bowl ranking.
"I know Sky is not a huge risk taker but with the care and understanding he got from VOA, he had the drive to rise to the top," Pam said. "I'm very proud of the young man he is."
Following his injury and surgery, Pam drove Sky from Bothell to VOA in Renton for all of his needed appointments. After he returned from the skating competition, Sky went from a full-arm cast to a short cast. Six weeks after surgery, Sky was out of the cast.
"I would encourage anyone I know if they have a sports-related injury, to drive to VOA," Pam said.
Sky said Dr. Barrett and the staff at VOA fully respected what he does as an athlete.
"All I can say is thank you," the now 15-year-old skateboarder said.
Since the May event, Sky has continued skating in competitions. After a competition the weekend of Aug. 8, he was ranked third in the World Cup Skateboarding Pro Bowl.
Dr. Fredrick Huang, M.D
Like a lot of people it was easier to deal with knee pain than to face a total knee replacement. I did this for nearly 15 years. When the cortisone shots stop working last year I called Dr. Fredrick Huang and told him I was ready! From the very beginning through post surgery follow-ups I was very well informed of every detail of the pending surgery and recovery process. All people I came in contact with was extremely helpful and informative whether it be Dr. Huang, his assistants, the nurses and staff at The Valley Orthopdic wing, the physical therapist, massage therapist and all other people invovled I was so incredibly cared for. These professionals made this an incredibly easy process and relatively painless. A little uncomfortable at times but pretty painless! Now I am doing all the things I want including hiking and playing golf (walking) painfree. If and when the time comes that I experience pain in my left knee I will not hestitate to have a total knee replacement with Dr. Huang and his staff performing the procedure. Thank you Dr. huang for the pain free life I now enjoy.
Dr. Craig Arntz

Victor Buonadonna is no stranger to shoulder pain. Ten years ago Victor had surgery to repair his right rotator cuff. Then pain in both shoulders was again limiting Victor's mobility and active lifestyle. His family physician referred him to VOA shoulder specialist, Craig Arntz, M.D.
Examination and imaging studies confirmed that Victor had bilateral shoulder rotator cuff tears. Dr. Arntz explained to Victor the rotator cuff is made up of four muscles and tendons that blend together to form a "cuff" over the upper end of the arm (head of the humerus). These muscles combine to stabilize and move the shoulder.
Normal healthy rotator cuff tendons rarely tear. Most rotator cuff tears occur through tendons that have been weakened from the combined effects of injury, "wear and tear" and aging changes.
Individuals with rotator cuff tears usually experience shoulder pain and weakness. Many people with rotator cuff tears complain of a painful catching or grinding sensation when the shoulder is moved. At first, the pain may be mild and only present with reaching or lifting activities.
Dr. Arntz explained rotator cuff tears usually get worse over time. As the rotator cuff tear enlarges, affected individuals often experience increasing pain and disability. Over time, the pain may become noticeable at rest or with no activity at all.
In Victor's case, Dr. Arntz first recommended a trial course of non-surgical treatment, including physical therapy, activity modification and pain management. When these measures proved ineffective, Dr. Arntz recommended rotator cuff repair.
Dr. Arntz performed rotator cuff repair surgery on Victor's left shoulder in May 2008. Victor's right rotator cuff tear was repaired in November 2008.
After surgery, Victor's shoulder repair was protected in a sling. Dr. Arntz recommended physical therapy.
"I was religious about physical therapy," Victor said. "I can't overemphasize how important physical therapy is."
Rotator cuff repair surgery can be very effective in helping a patient regain lost shoulder comfort and function. After surgery, patients are able to return many normal activities and sleep comfortably.
As long as the shoulder is cared for properly and barring additional injury, the benefit can be permanent, Dr. Arntz said.
"Victor was very motivated. Although it took some time, he is now free of shoulder pain and able to do the things he wants to do."
Dr. Arntz said. "I'm very pleased Victor is doing so well."
"Dr. Arntz gave me back my shoulders," Victor said.
Last April, pain-free shoulders and extended winter weather allowed Victor to take on skiing at Crystal Mountain and snowshoeing on Mt. Rainier. This past summer, he went on a six-mile kayak paddle off of Marrowstone Island and also spent four days kayaking around Lopez Island.
"When I would hike with poles or ski, or kayak particularly, my shoulders would keep me up all night. Now that's all gone," Victor said.

After years of painful arthritis keeping them from the activities they enjoy in life, VOA patients share their joint replacement journeys.
Edward James, a retired high school principal, lived with the pain of arthritis for nearly four years before deciding on surgery. He had his right hip replaced on March 31, 2008.
"When you can't do the things you used to do, you start to get depressed," James said. "You don't think it's that bad, but it really is. You get used to the pain."
James researched the procedure online but it was word of mouth that made him decide on VOA and Dr. Barrett.
"They are well thought of in the community," he said.
Before arthritis limited his activities, James was fairly active playing basketball, tennis and racquet ball. He completed master gardener training 12 weeks before surgery and now he's back in his garden.
"Being retired, there's lots for me to do," James said. "Most of all, I can bend over and tie my shoes. I couldn't do that before. I have a lot more flexibility."
On May 19, 2008, Geoffrey Newing had his left hip replaced after living with bone-on-bone pain for almost two years.
"All of the cartilage was gone," Newing said. "I ran track and raced jet skis. I just wore it out," Newing said.
Like Edward James, Newing's joint replacement journey was a positive one. He was back to work two weeks after surgery and had no pain. Eight weeks after his surgery, Newing vacationed in France.
"The only thing that hurt was my feet from all the walking," he said. "I can't believe I recovered so quickly. It was just tremendous."
Although Newing recognizes the majority of people view hip replacement as major surgery, for him "the outcome of what I went through is minimal to get my quality of life back and do the things I enjoy doing."
Even when military retiree John Clements was living with bone-on-bone pain in his right knee, he started his day at 6 a.m. and kept going until about 10 p.m. He lived with arthritic deterioration in his knee for 20 years.
Clements had his right knee replaced on June 23, 2008. He interviewed three orthopedic surgeons before deciding on Dr. Barrett and VOA.
"Dr. Barrett is the only one that asked me questions about my lifestyle before and what I expected to do after the operation. He was the only one interested in what I had been doing and what I wanted to continue to do," Clements said.
Clements owns a construction electrician business. He is also a firearms instructor and works with the police, military and civilians.
"I'm very active doing many, many things. The thing that was limiting was the immobility in my leg. Now, I only have to work on strengthening my leg." Clements said.
In addition to continuing to strengthen his replaced right knee, Clements is working on strengthening his left knee to prepare for replacement in October. If the left knee is built up before surgery, the recovery time should be faster.
After going through his first knee replacement surgery, Clements had this advice for anyone considering joint replacement:
"If you're used to pain and you like pain, then don't do it. If you want to get rid of the pain, have your knee replaced. There is no pain like bone rubbing on bone going through your body."
Clements also said that after his surgery, his flexibility is coming back.
"There is no doubt in my mind I can have good flexibility and range of motion," he said. "I'm not going to skip a beat."

Dear Dr. Cero,
You are an excellent surgeon. Both of my surgeries, on my leg and arm went smoothly. For a woman turning 80, I give you a lot of the credit. You prepared both my family and me for both of the surgeries and gave me excellent care afterwards. Your bedside manner has been warm and straightforward.

To: Valley Orthopedic Associates
Care of: Dr. Cero,
Joint replacement is a serious decision in one's life. But when you consider the pain of bone on bone and the quality of life you give up every day you put this decision off you will never regret having it done. Getting used to pain is really 'giving up on your activities and quality of life.' You get depressed without even knowing it because you aren't doing what you enjoy because of pain. The reality is you don't even recognize what you have given up prior to the surgery until after surgery and you get YOUR own life back.
For me, researching the procedure was a must in order to best mentally and physically prepare myself for this big decision. Next came researching doctors, their process and their reputation in the field and community. Last but certainly not least was investigating the hospital the orthopedic surgeon chose to use for operations.
I selected Valley Orthopedic Associates, Dr. Susan Cero for my surgeon. It was the best decision of my life. I had bilateral knee surgery, both knees replaced at the same time. Her professional bedside manner, the process she subscribes to for pre surgery preparation and post surgery care is phenomenal. She wanted to know my lifestyle before surgery and my expectations after surgery. This made a huge impact on me and definitely helped me make my decision. At 4 weeks after surgery I was walking without a walker or cane and back on the road to a wonderful recovery. The truth is Dr. Cero was right, what you put into your recovery is what you will get out of it! I would do this surgery again in a minute IF I had to and I'd request Dr. Cero and Valley Orthopedic Associates. My only regret is I waited for too many years before having it done.
Thanks Dr. Cero for giving me back a quality of life I have been missing.
Sincerely,
Pat Skura

I spent one year hardly able to walk. For three months I needed a cane to standup, it was then I knew I must try to find a solution. My doctor Toulouse suggested I see doctor Howe. Doctor Howe decided to do L4-5 STENOSIS and L4-5 LAMINECTOMY. He did this procedure on March 24th and now nine weeks later I can walk without a cane. I am so grateful to him for this gift!!! He gave me my life back.

Due to the fact I injured my knees severely when I was young and playing sports. I was in need of total knee replacment for both knees. After exhausting every non-invasive way of providing relief I went forward. I am in my mid forties and after finally completing both procedures, I cannot express the thanks I owe to Dr. Huang and his associates. No matter what the problem or condition, I was cared for like family. So there was no question when I needed my rotator cuff repaired; Dr Huang carried out the work and I recovered in no time at all.

I had been having trouble with my right shoulder for a couple of years and tried non-surgical alternatives. When I slipped on my deck and landed hard on my right shoulder I ended up in VMC emergency, where the doctor referred me to Dr. Huang. Dr. Huang had test done and found I'd badly torn both bicep tendons, had another tendon damaged and torn the bicep and would require surgery. I had had a sports related rotator cuff repair on the same shoulder about 20+ years ago and it took two months to be able use my right hand for simple tasks, and I was worried about not being able to at least type and travel as my job require a lot of both. submit it via the form. Thank you Dr. Cero, for not only the great care you gave me, but also for taking the time to share a bit about yourself.
Sincerely,
Ramona Wolfe

My Thanks to Dr. Huang his PAC Andy and the VOA staff

Dr. Huang did the surgery and I started limited physical therapy the day I came home. Within a day I was able to work on my computer in a sling, kicked the meds after a week so I could have a clear head (not for the faint of heart) and was traveling and working at client sites in no time. In the second week I was brushing my teeth and shaving with my right hand, after a month of aggressive physical therapy, I had regained about 80% range of motion and tossed the sling and could do everything except carry more weight than a coffee cup, open doors, etc. It has been six weeks now and Dr. Huang, his great PA Andy and my physical therapist say I have made exceptional progress, as in out of the norm. I am still amazed and am grateful to Dr. Huang, Andy and his team. My friend had surgery on the same shoulder repairing far less damage and is blown away at my recovery...he was still locked up in a sling and just beginning physical therapy after over six weeks. I attribute my recovery to better surgery techniques, an aggressive physical therapy routine and being VERY careful...continually pushing the pain limits without munching meds, but not pushing to the point of risking reinjury. I was lucky to get referred to Dr. Huang.
