According to the Arthritis Foundation, 46 million people (nearly one in five adults) suffer from arthritis. Osteoarthritis affects more people than any other joint disease and while not life threatening, it can be a major cause of pain and disability.
Osteoarthritis is a spectrum of disease states which at the milder end of the spectrum is very amenable to treatment modalities that decrease symptoms, such as modification of activity, weight loss, strength training, oral anti-inflammatory medications, and injections of cortisone or other agents into the joint.
At the more severe end of the spectrum, symptomatic treatment may no longer suffice, and surgical options may be considered. Joint replacement of the hip and knee are two of the most commonly performed procedures for treatment of osteoarthritis of the lower extremity.
Several of our surgeons perform hip and knee replacement surgery at Valley Medical Center, located next to Valley Orthopedic Associates. The Joint Center at Valley Medical Center is a leader in developing and implementing new joint replacement techniques and technology. As the first dedicated joint replacement center in the Pacific Northwest, it has received numerous awards including a #1 ranking in Washington State for joint replacement surgery in 2010 by Health Grades. Through the use of pre and postoperative education, standardized treatment protocols, multimodal pain management, and specialized nursing care the Joint Center provides a patient/family focused joint replacement experience.
